Spring Rain Doesn't Slow Tire Rack Spring Nationals

LINCOLN, Neb. (May 29, 2013) – Despite heavy rains on Memorial Day morning, 308 Tire Rack SCCA Solo Championship Tour competitors made the trek from across the country to the Lincoln (Neb.) Airpark for the Spring Nationals, both to test their skill against a strong field and to prep for September’s Tire Rack Solo National Championships.

Those who attended last year’s National Championship event were greeted with a familiar track on Sunday – almost. The opening day’s runs came on the Karen Babb-designed west course from September, run in reverse.

Monday morning began with a rain delay, as overnight thunderstorms hung around and delayed the start time for the runs on the Mark Walker-designed layout. Once underway, however, the action remained tight as the final two heats were run on a dry track.

Leads were changed – or barely held – on the final day of competition.

Ricky Crow (Honda S2000) held a first-day lead of more than 0.4-second in B Stock, but Jason Kupka did his best to make the class close on Monday. Kupka (RTRT/Hanover Racing Team Honda S2000) posted the best class time during the final day, but fell just 0.081-second shy of Crow’s win.

Andrew Canak (Thanks Jay! Mazda Miata) was able to overcome a first day deficit to claim the win in Street Touring Sport. Canak was just more than 0.4-second behind Kraig Klippel (Stranoparts.com Mazda Miata) entering Monday, and on his final run bested Klippel’s time to take a 0.018-second narrow win.

The B Street Prepared battle was a duel between teammates, with Chris Mayfield and Robert Thorne co-driving the 3RAuto.com/CorsportUSA.com/Weston Auto Gallery Honda S2000. The pair ran nearly identical times both days, with Thorne holding the smallest of advantages on both courses. Thorne’s final margin of victory was 0.153-second of aggregate time.

Jon Clements (Mondiale 85s) held the opening day lead in C Modified, and held that lead until the final runs on Monday. With his last run, however, Brandon Lavender (Van Diemen RF85 FF) jumped to the top of the charts, leaving Lincoln with a 0.208-second advantage.

The Tire Rack Championship Tour – running the traditional National Tour format – has the month of June off before returning to action at the Summer Nationals in Blytheville, Ark., July 6-7. More information on the Tire Rack SCCA Solo Program is available at www.scca.com/Solo.
