’24 #SCCARunoffs Qualifying Leaders: Day 2

The second of three qualifying days has come to a close at Road America for the 60th anniversary SCCA® National Championship Runoffs® presented by Sunoco, taking place Sept. 28-Oct. 6, 2024, in Wisconsin‘s Kettle Moraine region amongst quaint towns such as Elkhart Lake and Plymouth.

Wednesday was Hawk “Brake-Through Performer” day at the Runoffs. The one driver from each of 26 car classes who made the biggest improvement in qualifying position from Tuesday to Wednesday will now receive a free set of Hawk brake pads for street cars, race cars, or tow vehicles. Winners will receive official confirmation via the email address they supplied during Runoffs event registration. A list of Hawk Brake-Through Performer winners will also be posted to SCCA.com early Thursday morning.

Only one day of qualifying remains, with drivers in each class having a final 20-minute session on Road America’s 4.048-mile, 14-turn circuit Thursday to improve lap times before Tire Rack Pole Award winners are lauded.

Catch the excitement online at the Runoffs Live Timing/Scoring webpage. That’s where you’ll find an audio-only qualifying broadcast, as well as current and archived Timing/Scoring data from all on-track sessions. That same audio presentation – featuring commentary from pro driver Tom O’Gorman, Road America announcer Eric Mueller, and Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA Super Tour broadcasters Larry “Lefty” MacLeod and Gregg Ginsberg – will be heard around Road America on the public address system as well.

Results, an event schedule, facility map, and much more can be found at the SCCA Runoffs event webpage button linked below.

The Search for a Super Sweep

Established in 2009, the SCCA Road Racing Super Sweep is one of the most demanding accomplishments a Club racer can achieve. To merit the award in 2024, drivers must win one Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA Super Tour race, a Hoosier Super Tour Points Championship, a U.S. Majors Tour® Conference Championship, and a National Championship Runoffs race – all within a single class.

Last year, only three drivers earned Super Sweep honors, which certainly stands as testament to the immense skill and commitment required for the feat. Those three competitors were Graham Fuller in GT-Lite, Charles Russell Turner in Formula Enterprises® 2, and Formula Vee®’s Andrew Whitston.

At Road America this year, 17 of 26 Runoffs races could produce a Super Sweep winner – and upwards of 27 drivers are still in the hunt before Hagerty Race Days begin. Some drivers only require a Runoffs race win; others need a combination of factors to align.

It’s a complex equation, especially when a Runoffs performance counts toward the Hoosier Super Tour Nationwide Points Championship.

The best way to stay atop of developments is to tune to SCCA.com or the SCCA Official YouTube channel for Runoffs Hagerty Race Day video coverage presented by Mazda.
