SCCA’s Solo® National Tour crossed the timing line on the first event of its 2024 season with the Tire Rack SCCA® Phoenix Solo National Tour at Arizona Motorsports Park during the Feb. 24-25 weekend. On both Saturday and Sunday, competitors were met with perfectly sunny skies, minimal breeze, and temperatures in the high 70s at the Litchfield Park, AZ, facility.
Arizona Motorsports Park offers a huge asphalt lot, which Arizona Solo Region took full advantage of through the fun and flowing Elliot Speidell-designed courses that offered unique challenges to all 138 drivers. Beyond that, paddock parking was generous, the facility was easy to navigate, and (just as importantly) delicious pork BBQ and mac-n-cheese highlighted the Region-led welcome party.
On The Course
If you can tell how the season is going to go by the first runs of the year, then let’s give it up for Shauna Rios and the season on the horizon. Rios took the first win of the 2024 Solo National Tour season, besting the Ladies Street Tire Bump Index in her Porsche Cayman S to grab that first trophy of the new year.
The cliché is that no one remembers second, but that’s not true here – Morgan Lee and the D Street class were next to wrap on Sunday morning, giving him a great start on his adventures this season.
The comradery in Solo Spec Coupe was on full display in the Phoenix suburb, with the results coming down to the final runs. Hayden Pirrera held the lead after his third run, with Taylour Wargo just twelve-thousands behind going into his last run. Wargo got a big hug from Pirrera at the end of his run, but he didn’t get more time – the win stayed in Pirrera’s hands.
Jason Bucki took his Super Street win with some thunder on Sunday. Bucki was two-thousands behind Brian Peters after Saturday’s runs, but picked up more than a second on his final Sunday run to take sweet, sweet victory.
There was a lot more action that went on over the course of the weekend – all of which can be seen in the event results.
