For my third visit to an SCCA Track Night in America Driven by Tire Rack near Boston, I opted to participate in the work/run program during a recent Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park event.  The run/work program lets SCCA members get one on-track session at a very budget-friendly rate while also offering support to the event, similar to what is done at autocrosses.  Support can range from corner working, to grid, to check-in and tech.

It turns out I was assigned to work a corner. Now, I’ve never worked corners before.  But the control personnel wisely paired me with a nice guy named Matt, who was a very experienced Thompson Speedway corner worker.  So after running in the first Track Night in America Koni Novice Experience session, I headed out to the circuit’s Turn 9 for the rest of the evening for some additional education from Matt.

So there I was, right near the action, waving flags.  Was it fun?  Absolutely! Let me put it this way: On my next visit to Track Night in America, I am volunteering the whole event.  And I hope that with enough training, I may be able to get more involved and work other SCCA events.
