TOPEKA, Kan. (May 27, 2011) Memorial Day weekend is significant around the world of motorsports, with attention focused each year on Indianapolis, Charlotte, Monaco and Lime Rock Park. In terms of pure numbers, though, none of them can touch the events that the members of the Sports Car Club of America are hosting this weekend. In all, the 45,000 member club is hosting eight SafeRacer National Series National races this weekend at five different road courses across the country. In addition to the National Club Races, both the Tire Rack ProSolo and Tire Rack Solo National Tour compete this weekend, as does the RallyCross National Challenge and dozens of regional and local club races and Solo events. The most attended Club Race this weekend will feature 271 entrants at the Western Michigan Region May Double National, held at Gratton Raceway. Twenty-nine classes of national races are eligible at each of the Nationals. With the Land O Lakes Region Spring National at Brainerd Raceway, the Continental Divide Region Rock the Peak Double National at Pikes Peak International Raceway, the Lone Star Region Lone Star Grand Prix at Texas World Speedway, and the Northwest Region Double National at Pacific Raceway, nearly 900 cars will participate in Club Racing nationals during the weekend. Lincoln, Neb. will host nearly 600 autocross entrants for the Lincoln ProSolo that began on Friday and runs through Sunday, and the Lincoln National Tour that runs on Sunday and Monday. The San Francisco Region is hosting the Rancho Cordova RallyCross out west. In addition to the competitors, hundreds more SCCA members will serve as workers at each of those events, including the professional races. SCCA workers volunteer as corner workers, as race officials, in timing and scoring, registration, and all other aspects of putting on a successful race event. More information on the SCCA, its racing programs, and volunteer opportunities are available at www.scca.com.
