TOPEKA, Kan. (February 20, 2014) - With the SCCA National Convention and North American Motorsports Expo approaching, March 7-9, in Charlotte, N.C., more and more highlights and activities are falling in place for attendees.
The SCCA National Convention includes the Hall of Fame Induction Banquet and Awards Ceremony Presented by Mazda and various training exercises and informative sessions for Club and Region leadership. Cost to attend the SCCA Convention is $295, with registration closing for this part of the program on February 28.
The North American Motorsports Expo, or MSX, is a trade show featuring vendors geared to the activities that SCCA members are involved in – road racing, autocross, rally, and performance parts. The MSX show is free for SCCA members to walk the show floor, and $95 to listen to the sessions featuring guest speakers Randy Pobst, Andy Pilgrim, and more. Registration remains open for MSX through the event.
Highlights From the SCCA Convention
The SCCA National Convention begins on Friday afternoon with the Club’s annual business meeting, but quickly moves into the keynote speaker. Chris Robbins, the Senior Manager, Customer Service Training Department at Southwest Airlines and SCCA member, will take those in attendance through their processes.
Southwest Airlines knows the competitors are fierce; the challenges overwhelming; and the changes never-ending. Yet, Southwest Airlines has become the largest domestic airline in the country and the most profitable. SCCA members will learn how one of the world’s most admired companies does it, and what the Club can learn from their actions. Region leaders will learn what has made Southwest Airlines successful when so many have failed, and what lessons can be applied to the Regions.
Friday night also features an exclusive sneak peek of the MSX Expo floor for Convention attendees.
Following Saturday’s sessions is the Hall of Fame Induction Banquet and Award Ceremony Presented by Mazda. Kathy Barnes, Bob Bondurant, Dan Gurney, Dr. Bob Hubbard and Jim Downing and Pete Hylton are this year’s crop of legends.
Highlights From MSX
In addition to the Expo show floor, free for SCCA members, MSX features a $95 featured-speaker option. Keynote speakers Randy Pobst (Racecraft – The Natural Laws of Passing) and Andy Pilgrim (Analyze the Course/Distracted Driving) highlight the Saturday, March 8 and Sunday, March 9 sessions. Technology tracks featuring chassis, shocks and dyno instruction and more, driving tracks, business tracks and data acquisition tracks are on the agenda, running both days.
With the SCCA celebrating 70 years in 2014, we are recording the history of the SCCA through the stories that the members tell. Raleigh Boreen will be hosting members near the entrance to Exhibit Hall C and asking them some questions to tell their favorite SCCA stories, which will be compiled throughout the year as a tribute to the Club.
Those close enough to drive to Charlotte may be interested in stopping by for the Solo Town Hall and Club Racing Town Hall meetings, on the MSX show floor, on Saturday afternoon. This is a chance to ask questions of the rules makers and clarify any questions away from the race track in a face to face setting.
Sunday morning, as the doors open on the final day of the MSX show, attendees are invited to enjoy coffee with some of the biggest SCCA legends. Pete Hylton, Toly Aruntunoff, Karen Babb, Bob Bondurant, Marc Gerstein, Jim Downing, Sue Roethel, Art Trier, Bob Hubbard and Kathy Barnes are just some of the legends who may stop by for storytelling, presenting, and entertainment.
