SCCA Shootout Rips Through the Cones and Racetrack for a Glorious Vegas Debut

The first ever Tire Rack SCCA Shootout most definitely had a winning hand in Las Vegas over the Feb. 15-16, 2025, weekend, although it took a couple of quick draws and a steady strategy for drivers to beat the odds.

The Shootout, which featured an autocross-packed Saturday followed by Time Attack on-track thrills Sunday, combined a driver’s fastest Saturday morning autocross time with their fastest Saturday afternoon run along with their fastest Time Attack track lap on Sunday to land a score that could win them the ultimate prize of a podium finish. Meanwhile, boasting temps in the mid-60s and dry desert air, conditions couldn’t have been better for wide open fun at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

At the end of the weekend, the top overall honors came down to a split of the styles.

First Weekend Highlights

Doug Rowse took a handy lead after two autocross runs in his CAM-S Chevrolet Corvette, but Danny Weller bested the field by a whopping four seconds on the track in his wild CAM-C Chevrolet Camaro to claim the top spot for the weekend by just 0.478sec over Rowse.

The battles weren’t just at the top. Waylon Goebel, Marc Segal, Joe Carl Goeke, and Ezay Castillo all claimed class wins of their own in their attempt to conquer the format and the weekend.

Castillo’s win may have been the most intriguing of all. He and his father, Henry, shared a Chevrolet Camaro for the event. On Saturday, the duo set out for their first autocross runs – ever. Impressive! Then on Sunday, they set out on their first runs around a racetrack – ever.

The father-son Castillo duo have already made plans to return to local events, mostly because Henry wants a shot at redemption and to prove to young Ezay that he can’t get one over on pops quite that easily.

The Vegas weekend was an impressive debut for the Tire Rack SCCA Shootout, and the best part is that it leads into even more action as we dig into the year.

The six-event series features three events that challenge drivers on the autocross course one day and the racetrack the next, with three other events concentrating solely on autocross. Competitors then battle in a variety of autocross classes that include Street Touring, CAM, Xtreme Street, Club Spec, and Solo Spec Coupe.

For drivers looking to ratchet up the difficulty level, there are season points to chase.

The next chance to compete in the Shootout series comes May 2-4 near St. Louis, at the St. Charles Family Arena in St. Charles, MO. That one’s an autocross-only event.

Want to tackle autocross and track competition in the Shootout? The next one of those on the calendar comes on May 16-18 at NCM Motorsports Park in Bowling Green, KY.
