If you’re a motorsports fan, you know Mike Joy – even if you don’t know the name, you certainly know his voice. Since the early 1980s, Joy has filled the airwaves at NASCAR races as a pit reporter and lap-by-lap announcer. Over the years, Joy has announced at a variety of events, from Formula One races to Barrett-Jackson auctions to even a baseball game. In 2023, he added “unofficial YouTube National Championship Runoffs® paddock reporter” to his impressive resume – and for those of us who have grown up listening to him, hearing his voice at the Runoffs was like being wrapped in a warm motorsports blanket.
“Each year, the Sports Car Club of America® invites the most successful of its amateur racers to the Runoffs to determine the National Champions – this year it’s at VIRginia International Raceway,” Joy said while standing on the GT-1 Runoffs qualifying grid in the four-minute segment that appears on his YouTube channel. “These are the ground-pounders, the cars of GT-1. Familiar looking bodies; Corvettes, Camaros, Mustangs, and more. They are among the fastest of the full-bodied cars here.”
Joy, an obvious fan of the Club and past North Carolina and Central Carolinas Region member of the SCCA, is seen walking the paddock, chatting with drivers from GT-2 to SRF3, T4, and more, even stopping by Jerry Oleson’s H Production paddock spot to offer insight into what makes SCCA Road Racers tick. He then discusses volunteering and promotes SCCA Track Night in America® Driven by Tire Rack.
When asked by one racer what Joy was doing at the Runoffs, he answered: “Just enjoying it. Reminiscing.”
