DRIVER REQUIREMENTS

SCCA Race Experience Events are designed to be an access point for wheel-to-wheel racing for drivers of all experience levels including those without formal racing licenses or wheel-to-wheel experience. Below is a general outline of what's required to drive in an SCCA Race Experience Event and full eligibility details can be found in the document linked at the bottom of this page.

For Drivers at or above the “Age of Majority” (Typically Age 18 but may vary.)

  • Current Annual Membership in the SCCA.
  • Valid government-issued driver’s license.

 

Minor Drivers (All)

The SCCA defines a Minor as an individual between 14 years and the age of majority as determined by the law in the state of the individual’s residence (typically 18 years old, but it may vary). A Minor may drive in the SCCA Race School provided they meet the following requirements:

  • Current Annual Membership in the SCCA.
  • A completed Annual Parental Consent, Release and Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk and Indemnity Agreement and a completed Minor’s Assumption of Risk Acknowledgement (note: forms vary by state and witnessing method). This document must be filed annually until the Minor achieves the age of majority in his state.
  • State Driver's License.

 

Minor Drivers (Without a state driver's license) 

For minor drivers 14-years-old through the age of majority in their state who do not have a State Driver's License, they must have an SCCA Road Racing Novice Permit in order to drive which includes the following:

  • Prior racing experience in karts, quarter midgets or similar entry-level wheel-to-wheel racing.
  • Current Annual Membership in the SCCA.
  • A completed Annual Parental Consent, Release and Waiver of Liability, Assumption of Risk and Indemnity Agreement and a completed Minor’s Assumption of Risk Acknowledgement (note: forms vary by state and witnessing method). This document must be filed annually until the Minor achieves the age of majority in his state. These documents can be found in the member portal at my.scca.com
  • A completed SCCA Physician’s Examination and Medical History Form, (This is very similar to a Sports physical, where the doctor fills out the SCCA form, also able to be found at my.scca.com”)
  • Proof of Age: A photocopy of both sides of his State Operator’s Permit/Driver’s License, government issued identification, passport, or birth certificate.
  • Applicants must submit a resume of their prior racing experience that will be evaluated by their Divisional Driver Licensing Administrator.
  • If the Divisional Driver Licensing Administrator is satisfied with the applicant’s experience, he will schedule an interview with the applicant to complete the evaluation. It is preferred that the interview be in person, but if necessary, a telephone interview is acceptable.
  • If the applicant’s experience and maturity is satisfactory, the Divisional Administrator will recommend to the Road Racing Office that a Novice Permit be issued.
