A Record Seven Lay Claim to the RallyCross TripleCross Award in 2024

Winning your class at a Regional SCCA® RallyCross® event isn’t something you stumble into. Winning a RallyCross National Challenge, meanwhile, takes even more planning and skill. Then there’s winning a RallyCross National Championship – this is next-level stuff. So, imagine if someone managed to win a Regional, a National Challenge, and a National Championship all in the same RallyCross class in the same year – that feat is known as the TripleCross, and it’s an award so difficult to win, it needs to be celebrated.

In 2024, a record seven people earned the TripleCross Award, placing them in the RallyCross record book as last year’s top performers – but before we name the latest TripleCross winners, perspective is necessary.

From the creation of the TripleCross Award in 2012 to 2023, only 34 drivers had claimed the TripleCross; in 2023, there were only two (Lothrop Withington IV and Timothy Thompson) who took the honor. There have been a few years where four drivers claimed the TripleCross, but before 2024, the record for the most TripleCross Awards presented in a single year was six in 2020 (Josh Armantrout, Robert Seelig, Shawn Roberts, Mark Hill, ZB Lorenc, and Austin Dowda).

That record now moves to seven.

Northeast Oklahoma Region’s Donald Carl earned his 2024 TripleCross Award in Stock Front Wheel Drive. His Regional win came in his home Region, with the National Challenge event not coming far from home, either, thanks to the Northeast Oklahoma RallyCross National Challenge at Billy Bob’s Farm in Billings, OK. Then came the RallyCross National Championship in Alabama. Carl’s 2024 TripleCross Award will look fantastic on the shelf next to the other TripleCross Award he earned in 2015 – the year he won his first SCCA National Championship title.

Logan Altmyer, hailing from Tennessee Region, earned his 2024 TripleCross Award in Stock Rear Wheel Drive. His Regional event win came during a Tennessee Valley Region event, with his National Challenge victory being scored during the Southern Sweet Tea RallyCross National, which was held at the same site as the 2024 RallyCross National Championship.

Stock All Wheel Drive competitor Shelton Wright laid claim to his 2024 TripleCross Award by never leaving his home Region – yet that’s not to say it was easy, as Wright hails from Tennessee Valley Region, which hosted the 2024 RallyCross National Championship. Like Altmyer, his National Challenge win also came at the Southern Sweet Tea RallyCross National Challenge.

Tennessee Valley Region members sure did well in 2024, with TVR’s Jason Fuller claiming a TripleCross Award in 2024. His Regional and National Challenge event resume for the year largely aligns with Wright’s, but Fuller’s trophy will read “Prepared Front Wheel Drive.” And while it won’t say this on the award, it should be noted that Fuller dominated his class at the RallyCross National Championship, earning the win by more than 18sec.

Longtime Washington DC Region member Shawn Roberts is no stranger to RallyCross competition. He’s also no stranger to the TripleCross Award – in fact, his 2024 TripleCross Award makes it a fitting three for this driver, who won the TripleCross previously in 2020 and 2021 (the same years he won SCCA National Championship titles). His 2024 Prepared Rear Wheel Drive wins came at a Washington DC Regional and the Country Roads RallyCross National Challenge in West Virginia.

Speaking of a driver who has an impressive collection of trophies, with his spectacular performances in 2024, Kansas Region member Mark Hill now owns his fourth TripleCross Award (meaning Hill has claimed a TripleCross Award with all but one of his National Championship titles). His Regional win came during a Kansas City Region event, with his win at the Northeast Oklahoma RallyCross National Challenge setting him up for the 2024 TripleCross Award that he earned when he won the Prepared All Wheel Drive class at the RallyCross National Championship by 32.45sec.

Rounding out the 2024 TripleCross Award winners is Jonathan Coatney. The Eastern Tennessee Region member is the first TripleCross winner in UTV Max. His wins came at a Tennessee Valley Regional event, the Country Roads RallyCross National Challenge and, of course, the National Championship event at Hollytree Off Road.

A complete listing of all TripleCross Award winners can be found on SCCA’s Hall of Fame & Awards page under the RallyCross Awards tab.
