Sunday’s Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA Super Tour featured eight group races, each scheduled for 14 laps or 35 minutes, whichever came first. Among the day’s highlights during Sunday of the first weekend of the tour:
Record Breaking: The cool ambient temperatures and the sun warming the track surface made for prime conditions this weekend at Sebring International Raceway, and it showed on the time sheets. Track records, as measured in SCCA racing during a race, fell in the first seven of eight race groups.
In total, 11 records fell. Tony Ave (Prototype 2), Axel Cabrera (Spec Miata), Jon Field (GT-X), Keith Joslyn and Ken Kannard (Formula 600 and F Production, respectively, for the second day in a row for each), Frank Schwartz (B-Spec), and Robert Wright (Formula X) all set the best times ever in their class. Russell Turner set two track records, sweeping the SCCA Enterprises-supported classes with track records in Spec Racer Ford and Formula Enterprises 2.
But arguably the most impressive came from Chip Romer in Prototype 1. His new track record of 1:56.442 (115.628 mph) made him the quickest SCCA racer ever at Sebring International Raceway, lowering the P1 record by two seconds and eclipsing Ryan Norman’s Formula Atlantic record, previously the fastest, by more than a second. Romer needed every bit of that lap time, as he took the win by just 0.795-second over Todd Vanacore. Vanacore, incidentally, is the second quickest ever, just three-tenths behind Romer.
Ready To Fly: The SCCA is a family, and part of that is watching the youngsters leave the nest to chase their dreams. Nolan Allaer, the third-generation open-wheel star, swept both Formula F races at Sebring in what may be his last Hoosier Super Tour event for at least a few months.
The defending Formula Continental National Champion leaves in just 15 days for the United Kingdom, where he has signed to race the 2023 BRSCC National Formula Ford Championship for Ammonite Motorsport.
Allaer follows fellow Hoosier Super Tour race winner Elliott Budzinski, who raced for Ammonite Motorsports as a Team USA Scholarship winner in the prestigious Formula Ford Festival. He still plans to compete at the Runoffs, both in Formula F and in Formula Continental, where he can use his champions provisional to enter.
Race Them All: Tony Ave is a racer’s racer – give him a car and he’ll drive it. Just this weekend, he was entered in Prototype 2 and Touring 1 at Sebring, but don’t expect that to be all as the year goes along.
“I don’t have to be on the road anywhere with any of the pro teams that we run during the Runoffs week, so we thought we’d stack as many classes in there as we could,” Ave said. “Or as many as my wife will let me run, anyway.”
Though Ave is known more recently as a big bore guy, running GT-1 and Trans-Am most famously, he began his career as a successful open-wheel guy. The prototype class is an extension of that, and clearly a skill that never left.
In Memorium: Morey Doyle’s American Sedan win on Sunday was extra sweet, and for good reason.
“My mother passed away this week, so it’s been a tough couple of days,” Doyle said on the podium. “I want to dedicate this to my mom, and shout out to my family at home.”
Win Great Prizes: Once again in 2023, each and every racer has an opportunity to take home a door prize during each Hoosier Super Tour winner, thanks to SCCA partners.
At Sunday’s podium celebrations, racers are selected at random to claim the prizes – though the must be present at the ceremony to win.
Among the prizes are swag packs and tools from Hawk Performance and Summit Racing Equipment, merchandise from SCCA Gear, tires courtesy of Hoosier Tire, and more.
Watch It On Reruns: The full day broadcasts from Friday, Saturday and Sunday can still be viewed on SCCA’s Official YouTube page. With Brian Bielanski and Gregg Ginsberg on the call, the new broadcast system opened at Sebring and the Hoosier Super Tour to favorable critical reviews.
