On Dec. 11, 2021, fierce storms and tornadoes wreaked havoc on Western Kentucky. That morning, things changed for NCM Motorsports Park, with many of its buildings taking significant damage. Still, the Bowling Green, KY, facility was not brought to its knees. Over the last four months, the NCM Motorsports Park staff has been rebuilding, prepping the facility for the events to come – one of which is the 2022 Tire Rack SCCA Time Trials Nationals Powered by Hagerty, taking place May 12-15.
Following the storms, NCM Motorsports Park was quick to get back up to speed. As Matt Busby, NCM Motorsports Park’s General Manager of Track Operations, told us in December, “We have been here before. We operated events in our first year without permanent buildings – we know how to do it and we can do it again.”
In a March interview with WBKO News, the local ABC affiliate, NCM Motorsports Park’s Executive Director Greg Waldron offered updates on the rebuilding process. “We’re working diligently with some of our local vendors and some of our local contractors to get the buildings torn down and get them rebuilt,” he explained. “We’re just now hitting our stride, and from now probably until the end of the year, every single weekend we will have an event on track.”
By the time the 2022 Time Trials Nationals (TTN) reaches NCM Motorsports Park on May 12-15, the track will have been in full swing for a while. In early April, NCM Motorsports Park’s Wendy’s Trek at the Track returned, where every Tuesday evening, the facility opens for people to run, walk, jog or bike the 3.15-mile circuit for free; similarly, the Corvette Experience kicked back into gear in early April. Karting is also taking place once more at NCM Kartplex.
Furthermore, GRIDLIFE, an SCCA partner via the North American Time Attack Council (NATA), will host an event at NCM Motorsports Park one month prior to the SCCA Time Trials Nationals.
“The 2022 Tire Rack SCCA Time Trials National Tour Powered by Hagerty got off to a tremendous start, with unbelievable competition on amazing racetracks, and we can’t wait to get to NCM Motorsports Park for the Time Trials Nationals,” said John Hunter, SCCA’s National Time Trials Manager. “NCM Motorsports Park has been through so much since the storms in December, but the track staff has been working diligently to ready the facility for our arrival. I can’t wait to roll into Bowling Green and get the Time Trials Nationals party started.”
A Fun TTN Schedule
Given all that occurred in December at NCM Motorsports Park, this year’s Time Trials Nationals will be both familiar and new. The event’s schedule, however, will remain as packed and as fun as ever.
While the official dates for the Time Trials Nationals run from May 12-15, the gates actually open on Wednesday, May 11, with check-in and tech from 4-8 p.m. On May 12, check-in reopens at 7 a.m., along with tech and the Transponder Rental Center. Come 8 a.m., the driver’s meeting will take place at the SCCA Event Center, with a novice briefing starting at 8:20 a.m., followed by novice pace laps and a novice classroom session at the pavilion. Practice sessions will run the duration of the day, with the track opening for course walks at 5:30 p.m.
Track action really heats up on Friday, May 13, with TimeAttack sessions running the duration of the day. TrackSprint, meanwhile, is the name of the game on Saturday, followed by that evening’s Hagerty Social Dinner.
With Sunday comes the conclusion of this year’s Time Trials Nationals, with even more TimeAttack sessions and the KONI Podium Celebration.
