For a certain generation of SCCA® members, the name Jim Fitzgerald conjures memories. Memories of Road Atlanta and the Runoffs, where the larger-than-life veteran seemed to be all encompassing. Of the more than 350 Club races won, or of Trans Am, or, sadly, of his untimely death.
Others may tie him to Road Racing’s Rookie of the Year award, now named for his honor, that has gone to such successful drivers as Mark Dismore, Eric Curran, Andrew Caddell, Kevin Ruck, Sean Rayhall, Trent Hindman and many, many others.
Whatever the reason, the story of the SCCA Hall of Famer is one that every member should know.
Our friends at Classic Motorsport took a deeper dive into the legend of Fitzgerald that includes Nissan, the Runoffs, Adam Corolla, Paul Newman, and “a helluva ride.”
