Where You From? -- The 2018 Tire Rack SCCA® Solo Nationals Championship has right around 1,400 entries. It should probably come as no surprise that nearly every state is represented, including Hawaii and Alaska. Which states are missing? That would be Wyoming, Rhode Island and North Dakota. Delaware, Maine, Mississippi and Vermont squeaked by with one entrant each. And which states are most represented on the Solo Nationals entry list? Well, Colorado counts for nearly 75 entries. Michigan registered about 80 entrants. Then there’s Texas and California that each had about 115 entries. As for Canada, provinces represented include Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec. Visit from the Roadkill Crew - Driving five days and nearly 1,700 miles from Bakersfield, California, to compete in their first-ever Tire Rack Solo Nationals are David Freiburger and Steve Dulcich, TV show personalities involved with the very popular Roadkill and Roadkill Garage programs seen on MotorTrendOnDemand.com. Roadkill is a reality TV show that is actually real and fakes nothing. It’s two guys getting in a car, having fun, and doing all sorts of crazy things.
Freiburger and Dulcich are co-driving in the CAM-T class, with their weapon of choice being a 1970 Dodge Challenger, nicknamed the “Vanishing Paint,” which made it across the country with a few hiccups along the way. You can see what went into building the car during a two-part episode of Roadkill Garage, and learn later about the duo's Solo Nationals experience in a future episode of Roadkill. Luckily for Club members, a 12-months subscription to MotorTrendOnDemand is available for only $29.99 when SCCA membership is renewed. Look for the discount coupon in SCCA member renewal packets.
Welcome Back! -- John Thomas hasn’t made a Solo Nationals appearance since 2011 when he placed second in F Prepared in his 1971 Datsun 240Z. In his Solo Nationals career that started in 1989, Thomas has 17 national championships, with an additional pair of runner-up finishes and two third place results. Now that his kids are a little older, Thomas is back, and ready to resume his winning ways. In the wet, he claimed a 0.175-second lead in FP over Josh McCall in a Mitsubishi Evo. Jason Frank, Jed Peterson, Jesse Waymire and Tom Holt are currently holding onto the remaining trophies in the 21-driver class.
