We spent the day polling members and here are the six best cars from the silver screen, as voted by the SCCA Membership!
6. 1961 Ferrari GT California from Ferris Bueller's Day Off
We're disappointed if you didn't just say that in Cameron's voice, followed, of course by the rant that they couldn't drive it. Afterall, Cameron's dad rubs it with a diaper.
5. Eleanor: 1967 Ford Shelby GT500 from Gone In 60 Seconds (2000)
Memphis' Raines' unicorn as the movie claims is the car named "Eleanor," the one that is always the hardest to steal. There is no doubt that the second rendition of Gone in 60 Seconds provided a better plot, effects, and general entertainment.
While the consensus is that the second Eleanor is better, credit should be given to the one that came before. The first Gone in 60 Seconds was essentially a drawn-out chase scene, and there's nothing wrong with that.
4. Herbie: 1963 Volkswagen Beetle
He was a Love Bug, went bananas, visited Monte Carlo, before returning in 2005 to race in NASCAR with Lindsay Lohan behind the wheel. The name Herbie is instantly associated with this lovable Volkswagen.
3. 1977 Pontiac Trans Am from Smokey and the Bandit
Burt Reynolds put this icon through the ringer as he fled from Sheriff Buford T. Justice and attempted to bootlet a truckload of Coors beer from Texarkana to Georgia. The film is another example of a drawn-out chase, but at least included an attractive leading lady and taught all of us how to handle a CB radio.
2. Porsche 917 from Le Mans
How long did you stare at that work of art, I mean racecar? Although Le Mans was a flop in the american box office, it is still a favorite among race fans as an accurate depiction of the era in racing.
1. 1968 Ford Mustang GT from Bullitt
Another film featuring Steve McQueen; the chase scene between this Mustang GT and a dodge Charger R/T contributed to success at the box office. The film is preseved in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant."
Honorable mentions go to the Delorean, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Christine, and the General Lee.
Thank you to all who participated.
