Thompson Takes Match Tour Round Two in Peru

PERU, Ind. (June 5, 2013) – Carter Thompson, of Murfreesboro, Tenn., took home the big hardware, winning Sunday’s Evolution Super Shootout bracket competition, the second of eight scheduled events for the 2013 Tire Rack SCCA Solo Match Tour.

The Evolution Super Shootout presented by BFGoodrich Tires uses class runs on Saturday to set the first 32 qualifiers in the bracket. Once the top 32 drivers were seeded, a 16-driver Last Chance Qualifier bracket was set based on indexed times from an additional four runs. Finally, the last 16 positions were filled with the top eight Ladies Class finishers plus an additional eight drivers pulled from a random drawing – the one remaining opportunity to get into the field.

The top 16 qualifiers for the event, in Bracket A, started Sunday’s competition off under cloudy skies with the occasional sprinkle of moisture. However, the weather did not hamper the fast times being set. Tom O’Gorman, of Mason, Ohio, was the fast qualifier in the event, setting the fastest time on Saturday in his F Prepared Full Throttle Indoor Karting Porsche 914, setting the fast lap in a car which he had only driven in completion once before.

O’Gorman would meet with the eventual event winner, Thompson, in the A Bracket final after defeating the D Street Prepared SoloRacer.com/MonoBalls.com BMW 330Ci driven by Alex Shchipkov. Thompson beat out Dave Montgomery, of Cincinnati, in the F Prepared Full Throttle Indoor Karting/Matco Tools Porsche 914, in the bracket semi-finals before taking the win over O’Gorman. Thompson’s win moved him to the final-four bracket.

Bracket B featured some close competition as well. David Feighner, driving a Ford Mustang E Street Prepared machine, matched up with C Prepared top qualifier Chris Miller, in a Ford Mustang Turbo for a shot at the bracket final. In the other semi-final, Carl Wener, the Street Modified winner, faced-off against Street Modified FWD winner Travis Robuck. Wener, in his Perry Performance Mitsubishi Evo, edged out Robuck in the T-Bones Home/Pure-Tuning Honda Civic to meet Feighner in the bracket final. Feigner would emerge with the victory, earning his spot in the final four.

In the LCQ bracket, G Stock top qualifier Jonathan Rogers (Hoosier Tire/Redline Electronics Dodge SRT-4 ACR) met Steve Ruschack (A Street Prepared Performance AutoWerks/Mifune Motors Pontiac Solstice GXP) in the semi-finals, where Rogers took the win. Eric Campbell (D Street Prepared Campbell Disaster Kleenup BMW 330Ci) defeated G Prepared winner Scott Giles (SemperFiFund.org/PME/Koni Honda CRX) in the bracket semis, en route to his run to the final bracket. Campbell got past Rogers in the LCQ Bracket final.

Bracket D, stacked with a combined 12 Solo National Championships and numerous event winners, saw Michelle Quinn face C Stock winner David Bianchi in the final. Quinn’s KBS MK 7 beat out Ladies 1 top qualifier Lorien Feighner’s Ford Mustang for the chance to compete in the bracket final, while Bianchi’s road through the bracket included Chris Harvey’s Street Touring R Honda S2000. When the dust cleared, Bianchi, in his first national event, was the bracket winner, driving his Nissan 350Z.

The final four drivers left standing were each given two chances to lay down their fastest time on the course. Campbell went up against Feighner, and pulled out the win. Bianchi, from the D Bracket, took on Thompson, the A Bracket winner. Thompson showed his blinding speed, advancing with a time just under two seconds quicker than Bianchi.

In the final, Thompson, again, came up big when it counted, defeating Campbell with the fastest indexed time of the day. Feighner took the consolation round-win for third place.
