FOUNTAIN, Colo. (June 26, 2013) – David Fauth, of Aurora, Colo., won Sunday’s Evolution Super Shootout bracket competition, the third of seven scheduled events of the 2013 Tire Rack® SCCA Solo Match Tour.
The Evolution Super Shootout presented by BFGoodrich Tires used class runs on Saturday to set the first 32 qualifiers in the bracket. Once the top 32 drivers were seeded, a 16-driver Last Chance Qualifier bracket was set based on indexed times from an additional four runs. Finally, the last 16 positions were filled with the top eight Ladies Class finishers, plus an additional eight drivers pulled from a random drawing – the one remaining opportunity to get into the field.
The course, designed by Michael Feldpusch, was set up in the parking lot of Pikes Peak International Raceway. The layout offered competitors a little bit of everything, from high-speed sweepers to ultra-technical slaloms.
On Friday, before competition began, the drivers were allowed to take their cars on the Pikes Peak International Raceway course, led by one of the Bondurant School cars where drivers reported speeds of 100 mph during the “pace laps.” Another signature of this event was the annual Big Wheel Pro Solo competition, won by Shawn Hill and Van Townsend, which ran on Saturday night.
With the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb scheduled for Sunday, June 30, a few of those drivers, in town for that event, took in part of the match tour. Visitors included three-time overall winner and former overall record holder Paul Dallenbach, Rhys Millen, former General Motors factory rally driver, and Doug Siddens, who took a couple runs of the course in his Unlimited Class hill climb car.
Fauth, the eventual winner, was the fastest qualifier heading into Sunday’s main event, with an indexed time of 55.109 seconds in his C Modified Lucky Dog Racing/Front Range Van Diemen Honda.
In Bracket A, Fauth defeated James Darden (F Street Prepared class, RiptideHosting.com/Ron Williams BMW 2002) on his way to meeting Christopher Dorsey in the bracket final. Dorsey (E Prepared, 034 EFI/3Rauto.com Toyota Corolla GTS) got to the bracket final by beating David Jobusch (D Street Prepared, SCR Performance/StopTech BMW 325i). Fauth took the win over Dorsey’s Corolla, advancing to the final bracket.
In Bracket B, F Stock top qualifier Kevin Youngers put his Youngers Insights Ford Mustang GT up against the Road Tire FWD Mini Cooper of Michael Hill for the chance to advance to the bracket final. In the bracket’s second semi-final, Robert Thorne (B Stock, 3RAuto.com/CorsportUSA.com Honda S2000) drove to a semi-final victory over Jay Yost (F Street Prepared, RiptideHosting.com/Ron Williams BMW 2002). Thorne topped Hill and advanced to the final bracket with a win.
1995 Solo Driver of Eminence award winner John Ames took part in the competition in his Super Stock Chevrolet Corvette Z06, notching a first-round win over Bob Klinger in Bracket B. Ames fell to Youngers in the second round en route to his semi-final appearance.
In the LCQ Bracket, Road Tire RWD drivers Roger Kroog, in his Chevrolet Camaro, and Tad Kamanski, in his Porsche Boxster, faced off in the semi-final. Kaminski came out on top to advance in the intra-class match-up. Chris Gladu (Super Street Prepared, Lotus Exige) faced John Vitamvas (Road Tire RWD, Lotus Elise) in the other bracket semi-final. Vitamvas took the win over Gladu, and followed that up with a win over Kamanski, taking the LCQ bracket win and a spot in the final bracket.
In Bracket D, Amanda Hahn drove to victory in the 3rAuto.com/CorSportUSA.com Honda S2000 over Jessica Feldpusch, in her BMW 325is, on the ladies side of the bracket. In the second semi-final, Wayne Sartori (Super Stock, Gas Compressor Consultants Inc. Lotus Elise) beat Frand Spirz (Street Touring Xtreme, Lexus IS300). In the bracket final, Hahn took the win over Sartori, earning her spot in the final bracket.
The final four drivers laid down two runs each, with the best run for each driver determining who continues and who goes to the consolation round. Thorne, from Bracket B, beat Bracket C-winner Vitamvas. Top-qualifier Fauth got past Hahn to join Thorne in the event final.
In the final matchup, Fauth capped a dominating performance on the weekend as he took the event win over Thorne. Hahn took home third, beating Vitamvas in the consolation round.
