WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 30, 2014) – James Feinberg, of Fuquay-Varina, North Carolina, won the third Tire Rack® SCCA ProSolo® Super Challenge of 2014, held this past weekend in the shadows of FedEx Field. Shelly Monfort, of Saratoga, California, was the winning driver in the Ladies Challenge.
A total of 235 drivers set times during Saturday and Sunday morning’s traditional class competition. By far, the largest class was that of Street Touring R with 30 entrants. The class winner, Nick Barbato, was joined by some big-name class competition including two-time National Champion Brian Karwan.
Aside from large classes, difficult courses designed by Lee Picone met each driver. Challenging sightlines, and a cross-over on one course, threw many drivers for a loop. Saturday morning’s sessions were marked by many off course calls, until the drivers got the hang of the formidable course designs by the afternoon runs.
Feinberg (Bump Class, SoloPro Driving School Audi TT) qualified for the 22nd seed in Sunday afternoon’s 32-car Super Challenge bracket after finishing second in class to Rusty English.
In the opening round of the single elimination bracket, Feinberg beat Michael Moran (Street Index FWD, Teamziptie.com Toyota Celica GT), then zipped around Samuel Krauss (E Street Prepared, IAG Performance/Kartboy/Turn In Concepts Subaru WRX) in the second round.
In the quarterfinals, Feinberg was able to avenge his second-place finish in B Class by eliminating Rusty English (Bump Class, Rusty Alan Wrench Racing Subaru) en route to his semi-final matchup.
With four drivers left, Feinberg dispatched with Aaron Shoe (Street Modified, JSCSpeed.com/Office Furniture Solutions Mitsubishi Evo) earning a spot in the Super Challenge final. There, he lined up again Tony Savini to decide the bracket-winning driver.
Savini (Street R Index RWD, Stranoparts.com/Evo School Chevrolet Corvette) qualified for the Super Challenge eighth, overall. In the opening round, Savini took out Shane Chinonn-Rohden (Street Touring Roadster, Agile Auto Mazda MX-5), and then beat Brian Karwan (Street Touring Roadster, Karcepts Honda S200) to get to the quarterfinals.
Savini beat Jason Burns (Super Street R, Strano Performance/SSC Tint & Graphics Chevrolet Corvette), earning a spot in the semi-final match up against Eric Peterson. Savini put down Peterson (Street Index RWD, Solo Pro/Atomic Empire Toyota Spyder), pushing himself through to the final matchup against Feinberg.
Once all was said and done, Feinberg came away with the victory over Savini. Feinberg’s win marks his first bracket win of the 2014, following early departures during the two previous events.
Shoe completed the Super Challenge podium after beating Peterson in the third-place runoff.
In the ladies competition, Monfort (Ladies 2, Strano Performance Parts Ford Focus) entered the bracket as the top overall qualifier. On her way to the final, Monfort took down Jocelin Huang (Ladies 2, The Alignment Guy Porsche GT3) and Kathy Grunenwal (Ladies 3, T-Bones Home for Wayward Women Honda Civic Si). In the final, she defeated Chris Peterson (Ladies 2, Toyota Spyder).
To complete the podium, Grunenwal beat out Victoria Benya (Ladies 3, OS Giken/Honda Racing Honda S2000) in the third-place matchup.
Dawn Ammirata (SJF Scion FRS), of Caldwell, New Jersey, was the winner of the Bonus Challenge bracket.
Following three events, Eric Peterson leads the season-long Super Challenge standings with 62 points. His wife, Chris, leads the Ladies Challenge point standings with 79.
