SCCA Online Safety Steward Training Program Expands

In mid-2023, SCCA® brought you news that the Club’s Solo Safety Steward training and licensing process was more convenient than ever. Thanks to an online program developed through the SCCA Academy, Club members interested in becoming a Solo Safety Steward could complete the coursework at a pace and time that was convenient to them. The result was well over 100 individuals completing the course and becoming Solo Safety Stewards in the last seven months, which in turn assists their Regions in hosting events while simultaneously increasing safety levels for all participants. But when it comes to free, easy, and convenient online training, SCCA Academy is just warming up.

Several Safety Steward programs are now available through SCCA Academy. Case in point, RallyCross Safety Stewards now have their own online course, while the RoadRally Safety Stewards program – which pioneered the Club’s easy access online training initiatives in 2021 – has just undergone an update and refresh, allowing even the most experienced RoadRally Safety Stewards a chance to develop new skills.

Each online Safety Steward training program has been developed through close collaboration with members from each Safety Committee, with those committees and SCCA Academy working to build robust and accurate scripts, chapter quizzes, and final exams.

Members completing these online safety courses will qualify for three-year licenses.

Also developed and just rolled out are two new SCCA Drivers’ School online training programs. Coming soon are courses for Road Racing Stewards and other Road Racing Specialties.

“The programs being developed through SCCA Academy offer unparalleled ease of access when it comes to motorsports specialty training, and SCCA is proud to be spearheading the development,” said Chris Robbins, SCCA’s Director of Region Development. “These programs help ensure a high level of safety and uniformity across all 115 SCCA Regions, and continue to elevate SCCA’s already industry-leading safety training.”

While access to the Safety Steward and Drivers’ School training modules are available upon request, all SCCA members have access to SCCA’s Leadership courses, and the Corner Marshal and F&C courses.

“Any member of the SCCA can take the courses already loaded into the SCCA Academy – log into the Member Account Portal, go to the My Learning tab, and click Course Registration,” said Robbins. “If you don’t see a course listed, it’s because the ‘license’ courses require permission, which includes any of the three Safety Steward courses and the Drivers’ School courses. Interested parties for those courses should contact their Program’s Divisional Administrator or Divisional Steward to request access, and feel free to reach out to us at regionservices@scca.com with any questions.”
