Four times each year, SCCA Foundation – the 501(c)(3), not-for-profit, charitable arm of the Sports Car Club of America® – awards Region Development Grants aimed at assisting SCCA Regions in their growth and community outreach. Region projects must meet specific criteria to receive the grant, namely that the project they’re applying for must be for educational or charitable purposes that reach beyond SCCA; represent a new approach; should assist with a new program or event; or that the grant must be used to assist in hardship from a loss. With the May 31, 2023, grant application deadline came more than a dozen worthy submissions, with three SCCA Regions ultimately receiving SCCA Foundation Region Development Grants.
Philadelphia Region submitted for, and received, a Region Development Grant to assist in patching the Warminster Community Park runway, which is used by the general public for an assortment of community events, car shows, flea markets, and more. Philadelphia Region, meanwhile, utilizes this area for Tire Rack Street Survival teen driving programs, autocross schools, and autocross events. The ability to continue hosting those events at the site is jeopardized by the condition of the pavement. For this project, the total cost of the patchwork is $19,000; the Town of Warminster will be contributing $10,000 toward the project and Philly Region committed to raising funds for the remaining $9,000 – the Region Development Grant will cover $2,500 of that commitment and the Region contributed $6,500.
Northwestern Ohio Region will receive $1,750 to cover part of the cost of first aid training and equipment. This project is intended to start the process of training an initial class of eight people in first aid and the use of an automated external defibrillator (AED), which will be purchased and carried at all times within the Northwestern Ohio Region equipment and timing bus. A percentage of the trainees will be available at all Northwestern Ohio Region autocrosses to render first aid and, if necessary, administer the use of an AED to help those experiencing sudden cardiac arrest.
Colorado Region needed to replace 40 of its aging radios and headsets over the next five years, used in support of Tire Rack Street Survival, Road Racing, and other events. The analog radios the Region currently utilizes are decades old and no longer supported by the manufacturer. The new radios will be modern digital units, allowing for the safe operation of events. Colorado Region is covering the majority of the cost of the radios and will receive a $3,000 grant to close the gap.
Your Region Should Apply Next
SCCA Foundation Region Development Grants are intended to assist in funding Region projects, so Regions should be prepared to indicate in their application a dollar amount for Region investment in the project. Generally, the maximum amount for any single grant request is limited to $2,500 – although exceptions can be made.
Applications must include a detailed project management plan, with goals and objectives, timelines, overall budget, the schedule, and the people involved all being included. Simply put, these grants are for SCCA Regions that have done their homework but require a financial assist to make it happen.
Regions that previously applied but were not awarded a Region Development Grant are encouraged to apply again.
The next Region Development Grant application deadline is Aug. 31, with other quarterly application deadlines being Nov. 30, Feb. 28, and May 31.
