Randy Pobst -- pro racer, driving coach, author and TV personality - has made plans to compete in this year’s Tire Rack SCCA® Solo® Nationals taking place Sept. 3-7 at Lincoln Airpark in Lincoln, Nebraska. In a social media post, Pobst announced he’d be driving Geoffrey Zimmer’s 1977 Volkswagen Rabbit, nicknamed Lamborbunni, in the F Street Prepared class.
This will be Pobst’s return to Solo Nationals for the first time in more than three decades. However, the accomplished driver may still very well be a contender as he has several Solo Nationals championships to his credit, and won his first championship back in 1983 behind the wheel of a ’77 VW Rabbit.
Pobst’s career began with SCCA autocross, but he soon moved to road racing and was the man to beat in the early ‘90s Showroom Stock classes. In six Runoffs appearances, he managed two wins and three silver medals. In his professional career, Pobst won three SCCA Pro Racing World Challenge GT championships. Elsewhere, he is a two-time winner of the 24 Hours of Daytona, a North American Touring Car Champion, has driven as a factory driver for Porsche, Audi and Volvo, and has more than 70 professional race wins.
Will a rusty Randy clear away the cobwebs to claim another Solo Nationals championship this year? Well, race fans, you’ll want to be at the 2018 Tire Rack Solo® Nationals to find out for yourself.
