Allegedly, Arkansas is filled with hidden gems. For example, the SCCA Pro Solo. In this case, two courses that left the lights and turned into a 6 cone slalom before morphing into extended offset sweepers, that returned to a tighter slalom element before the finish, designed as a collaboration between Grady Wood and J. Jackson.
On these courses, the "surprise" of the day may have been ES, where Chris Bailey took a 1993 MR2 to the front of the class by over 1.9 seconds. His pursuit, none other than the favorite Eric Peterson, in a car 10yrs fresher. In fact Bailey's opus was fast enough to take top honors as the fastest Street car. Chris Peterson took that later MR-Spyder to a sliver of a margin in L2.
Otherwise, in SSM Randall Wilcox slipped undetected around Erik Strelnieks and Matthew Glagola who were locked in an RX7 vs Elise battle royale. As Strelnieks played strategy and switched to fresher tires, Wilcox staged behind the top pair and was able to end the day with a slim, but significant 0.108 lead. A similar story played out as Luke Oxner pipped Jon Pomrenke and Ricky Crow in STR, though all piloted various vintage S2000z.
The Whitener Family Civic Si enjoys a 2.044 (STF) and 2.177 (L3) lead making it arguably the best seeded car headed towards the challenge rounds.
Bump 1 was intense but Ron Williams was able to pull away from Doug Wille as the afternoon wore on. Bump 4, the most massive class in number AND car mass (EM, CamC...) had the FM of Jason Hobbs ahead of Eric Stemler's Vette, to talk about a disparity in vehicles!
As we head into Sunday other classes to watch include CS where Dave Ogburn III holds off Chris Harvey in the battle of professional tire testers.
The International Chemtrail Association has all but abandoned the opportunity to alter weather heading into Sunday, as neither precipitation nor cloud has been identified nor forecasted. A welcome change from the March event postponed due to snow. Tune in tomorrow for the tire melting action: http://www.ustream.tv/channel/sccasolo
