Event Recap: 2015 Tire Rack Texas Championship Tour

The second day of the Big Battle at the College Station, Texas Championship Tour ended a great weekend of intense racing and big competition in round three of the Tirerack Championship Tour. All weekend we had big Texas sized threats of weather in the area, but to our luck, we avoided it throughout each day and everyone was grateful for Mother Nature cooperating for the most part.

A few overnight showers prior to Sunday’s competition did make for some slick areas on course as things dried out, but for the most part it allowed everyone to stay with the stickiest tires possible and let the cars do the talking in the Sunday races.

The A-Street battle was a good one all weekend long. A group of Chevrolet Corvettes went toe to toe with an equally impressive group of Honda S2000’s and this race did not disappoint. In the end the Corvette group got top bragging rights with Daniel McCelvey of Houston, Texas driving his 2004 Corvette, with new Bridgestone rubber to the victory. It was a closely fought battle over another Texan, Todd Roberts in the S2000, also on Bridgestone's. Course designer and driver extraordinaire Vivek Goel would complete the podium.

C-Street was another great race with thirteen entries and lots of positions swapping back and forth through the weekend. On Sunday it would come down to Matthew Leach and Dave Ogburn III doing battle at the top, and swapping hot laps around the course. Dave, would come out on top in his 2012 Scion FR-S, in pretty red paint with Bridgestone tires.

In D-Street the close race on Saturday throughout the field continued right into Sunday. The Dynamic Couple from Alabama of Dennis Sparks and Jordan Towns would reap the benefits of their long trip in for the event, and knock off a strong field of Texas drivers to take the SCCA T-Shirts, and Medallion Trophies back to Alabama in their 2015 Subaru WRX on Dunlop Rubber. Look for this Dixie Audacity team to make a serious run at Trophies in Lincoln this year.

One of the Battles we were really excited about coming into this event would be contested in F-Street as a battle of the Classic American Muscle Manufacturers Ford and Chevrolet would ensue. We knew this would be a popular race amongst the Lone Star state entries and it lived up to the hype. In the end John Kanalas in his 2013 Ford Mustang Coyote would take the win over Doug Wille in the 2014 Chevrolet Camaro, but the narrowest of margins (less than 2 tenths of a second). Casey Weiss from Garland, Texas would round out the all Texas Podium in this race in his 2007 Ford Shelby Mustang.

Perhaps some of the best racing all weekend and certainly on Sunday was in STS. Both the Open race and the Ladies race was good, and would go down to the wire. First up in Heat 3, Sharon Eberlein of Aledo, Texas would out duel Connie Booker from the neighboring state of Louisiana in a battle that saw Sharon’s Pretty Blue Miata, beat the Honda CRX.

Following the ladies in STS were the Boys in Open Class in Heat 4, and this was perhaps the best race of the weekend. Blanton Payne would go into Sunday sleeping on the lead and have to do everything possible to bring his A Game and hold it on Sunday with a pack of fast drivers breathing down his neck. The rest of the class would really push him to answer, and he did in the end, narrowly holding off Gerry Terranova in this great race between late 80's Honda Civics prepped by the Whiteners. Barry Booker would finish this great race in 3rd, with Grant Watkins of Denton, Texas completing the Trophies in 4th. All four of these drivers were less than a second apart.

The largest field of the weekend was in STR, and it was a really good race between the S2000's. Ricky Crow would show everyone that last year’s top tire (Hankook RS3) was not dead yet, taking the win in this large class, with his co-driver John Hale from Austin, Texas finishing 2nd. Eric Davis and Corey Pettett however would show that BF Goodrich and the new Rival-S have certainly helped them bring their car to the party with very impressive 3rd and 4th place Trophy Finishes. Everyone seems hot on the Bridgestone Tires, and curious about the Rivals. But, not everyone is ready to give up on the Hankooks making for a very interesting next few months in Tire Wars on the National Solo scene.

In the battle of the coolest looking muscle machines on the site, C Prepared featured a great race throughout the class. 12 Drivers in 60's, 70's, and 80's classics from Ford and Chevrolet duked it out on the Texas A&M Riverside Annex Air Strips. Event Host Chair and Local Todd Farris would take home the win in this class, from Bryan, Texas. Robert Lewis, Chris Cargill, and Jeff Stroh would all trophy.

Taking a look at the Top PAX times over two days, we saw David Whitener in his 2002 Honda Civic take top honors in an impressive field of 193 drivers. He was followed by Lane Borg in STU, and Todd Farris in C Prepared. Kim Whitener was the top lady with a very strong 5th overall in PAX. Blanton Payne and Gerry Terranova (the top two drivers in the STS battle) pushed each other to top 10 PAX times as well.

It was a great weekend in Texas, and in less than two short months the National SCCA Solo scene will be back as the Texas Region will sponsor their annual trip to Mineral Wells outside of Dallas/ Fort Worth, for the Pro-Solo! See Y’all on the Course!
