Most spend their summer days soaking up sun shore-side, and 1,156 of the most devoted Autocrossers nationwide gathered on the concrete beach in Lincoln, Nebraska for the 42nd Tire Rack SCCA Solo National Championships. Without an ocean for over a thousand miles in all directions, these drivers made due with a sea of cones, plastic leis, Beach Boys Pandora radio stations, and the return of the swimming pool on a trailer. Dubbed "Cone Surfin' USA at the Concrete Beach", this year's competition generated tons of great action, pitting the best of all regions against each other to crown yet another round of champions.
While TireRack celebrated their 20th anniversary as the event's primary sponsor, which stands as the longest primary sponsorship of any SCCA championship, the CAM (Classic American Muscle) classes were brought to Nationals for the first time, bringing a whole new crowd towards the sport along with a new sponsor, Speedway Motors!
When the sand settled, many championships were decided by hundredths, even thousandths of a second including Super Street, A Street Ladies, B Street Prepared, D Street Prepared, E Street Prepared, F Street Prepared and C Prepared. Closest of all was the class of our youngest competitors, Junior B, with the margin of victory a mere 0.002, the second closest margin in Nationals history.
A huge thanks to Speedway Motors for providing the Solo community this virtual keepsake from the 2014 Nationals! Remember to head over to Speedway for all your speed needs (and their Facebook page)!
