The Spirit of Mazda: Dave Wheeler

Mazda Motorsports is recognizing the best racing with the monthly Spirit of Mazda awards. In June, Dave Wheeler, of Advanced Autosports, was recognized for his contribution to the sport and integrity.

He wrote the book on Spec Miata. No, really, he wrote The Spec Miata Constructors Manual, a book that has sold more than 3,000 copies. Since building his first Spec Miata in 2000, Wheeler has built more than 150 Miata racecars and currently maintains more than 40 through his prep shop - Advanced Autosports.

In the article by Mazda Motorsports, Wheeler’s wife Ann O’Malley explains, “He always says he was a child that played with toy cars, and he still does the same thing as an adult. He’s very into his cars and customers and he considers everyone one big family. But it’s not just business for Wheeler. He volunteered on the rules committee, the Spec Miata Advisory Committee, and took it very seriously. Integrity plays a big part in that,” O’Malley says.

SCCA is proud to have several members be honored with the Spirit of Mazda. For the complete article on Wheeler and more information about the award and recipients, visit MazdaMotorsports.com.
