Summit Point, West Virginia hosts this weekend's BFGoodrich Tires SCCA Northeast Super Tour, where fans can attend for a weekend ticket of $25 at the gate or a Sunday race day ticket for $15.
With 7 race groups ready to do battle, you'll get all the excitement you can handle. Some other things to look for:
Super Sweep Set Up: The BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour events are the qualifying races for the prestigious Super Sweep Trophy. Drivers can earn a Super Sweep trophy by winning a Super Tour Race, the nation-wide point standings, a Divisional Championship, and a National Championship at the Runoffs, all in the same class.
Scott Rettich was one of four Super Sweep winners in 2011, and is racing both Spec Racer Ford and Formula Enterprises this weekend.
First Time North: With the weather beginning to move toward the Summer months, this weekend’s race at Summit Point is the first time the Super Tour has moved north after events in Florida, Texas, Oklahoma and California.
On the entry list are 140 cars spread out among the 28 SCCA National Classes split into seven race groups.
Group one, for Production cars, STL and GT-Lite, has 25 cars on the entry list. The largest class in the group is F Production, including 2010 National Champion Kevin Ruck. Group 7 has the widest variety of classes and an additional seven cars, including defending Formula Enterprises National Champion Scott Rettich.
Twenty-one Spec Racer Fords make up Group 6, and 16 Formula Vee cars slot into Group 5 to make the two the largest classes of the weekend.
Young Pros On The List: In addition to being the defending Formula Enterprises National Champion and Spec Racer Ford runner-up at the SCCA National Championship Runoffs, Scott Rettich also captured each of the pro series’ championships for those cars a year ago.
19-year-old Emilee Tominovich is racing in Showroom Stock B at this weekend’s race before heading to Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca one week later for her full-time ride in the SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup.
Amy Ruman won last year’s Rising Star award from the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association (AARWBA) following her 2011 SCCA Pro Racing Trans-Am Series season after she became the first woman to win a Trans-Am race in the 45-year history of the series. Ruman will drive in the GT-1 class at Summit Point.
Super Tour Goes To The Northeast: The BFGoodrich SCCA Super Tour makes its first Northeast division appearance in the second season of the program when it visits Summit Point Raceway this weekend. The race is the fifth of nine BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour events on the schedule, with one in each of the SCCA’s geographical divisions in 2012.
The BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour activities will occur during Sunday’s. Each race winner will be given a victory lap and commemorative checkered flag, and the top three in each class will be treated to victory circle ceremonies after each race. Live Timing is available for those at the track and around the world on both days of the event at SCCA.com.
From The Everyday To The Incredible: The racers at this weekend’s BFGoodrich Tires Northeast Super Tour are a unique mix of talented drivers. Most are “weekend warriors,” mixing it up on the track on the weekends before heading home to their day-to-day jobs through the week. Some are youngsters with an eye on a professional driving career, honing their craft while looking to the future. The common theme to an SCCA competition is that these are seemingly ordinary people doing extraordinary things with racecars.
How prolific can these drivers become? Start with the motorsports legends – Bobby Rahal, Mark Donohue, Roger Penske, Michael Andretti, and actor/driver Paul Newman got their start in SCCA Club Racing. More recently, you could have seen current stars Boris Said, Graham Rahal, Sam Hornish or Scott Sharp at a Club race.
The Best In Amateur Racing: SCCA Club Racing is the top level of amateur motorsports. Of the 300 Club Racing events held coast-to-coast, 70 of them are designated as “National” events, meaning they are qualifying events for the National Championship Runoffs® and comprise the SafeRacer SCCA National Racing Series. Of these 70 events, only nine are designated as BFGoodrich Tires SCCA Super Tour races, bringing the National spotlight to town and making this weekend among a select group of can’t-miss events across the country.
