The Dawn Of An Era: In September 2012, the Sports Car Club of America rolled out the U.S. Majors Tour as the top level of amateur racing in this country. With events coast-to-coast and split into four Conferences, the Majors season opens this weekend at Sebring International Raceway with a doubleheader for the Eastern Conference. Drivers are coming from all over the country to participate in the weekend, featuring an enhanced race experience for drivers and fans, from pre-race to the product on the track to what happens after the race.
BFGoodrich Tires, Back Again: The official street tire of the SCCA, BFGoodrich Tires returns for its third season as sponsor of the BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour events. The 2013 schedule features six weekends that are part of the Super Tour and feature some of the best-known tracks in the United States. Including the opener this weekend at Sebring International Raceway, Auto Club Speedway, Circuit of the Americas, VIRginia International Raceway, and Watkins Glen International host a BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour weekend this season. Each of those events are a part of the U.S. Majors Tour and the robust SafeRacer SCCA National Racing Series.
SCCA Club Racers – The Best In The Country: There are lots of amateur road racing groups in the United States, but the clear leader of top drivers is with the SCCA. Though most are weekend warriors who take vacations from their full-time jobs to attend races, it’s a craft taken seriously. Bobby Rahal, Mark Donohue, Roger Penske, Michael Andretti, and actor/driver Paul Newman got their start in SCCA Club Racing. More recently, you could have seen current stars Boris Said, Graham Rahal, Sam Hornish or J.R. Hildebrand at an SCCA Club race.
Off The Deep End: The field at this weekend’s BFGoodrich Tires Sebring Super Tour event is a deep one, with 313 names currently on the entry list. If all show up, that would best the 300 cars that attended in 2011 as the most in recent history – a stout field to begin the Eastern Conference season.
That field includes 61 cars just in the Spec Racer Ford class, and 55 in Spec Miata. Both of those classes are led by their defending National Champions – Cliff White, from Huntsville, Ala., won his first Spec Racer Ford title last September, and Jim Drago, from Memphis, Tenn., grabbed his first Spec Miata Championship. Both drivers’ title defenses start this weekend in Sebring.
Snow Bird Season: Though this is the Eastern Conference opener, drivers are coming from around the country to be a part of it, gathering the National Points to help qualify for the SCCA National Championship Runoffs and get an early jump on the season. Points at the Majors Races, including this weekend’s BFGoodrich Tires Sebring Super Tour, come with a bonus when factoring into the Divisional and SafeRacer National Racing Series point championships. What does that mean? We’re seeing it already – the best drivers are coming to the best races.
Fun For The Family: Fans may attend the event at Sebring as guests of the SCCA for a $10 fee. Admission includes a free program and a paddock pass allowing spectators into the garage areas for up close visits with the cars and drivers.
