Big Fields Of Racing: The entry list for this weekend’s BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour is up to 161 cars at the close of early registration, a significant increase over last year’s event. Some of the best amateur racers the west coast has to offer are on the entry list, including former National Champions Lee Niffenegger (entered in Touring 4), Lance Stewart (Touring 4), four-time Spec Racer Ford Champion Mike Miserendino and three-time defending champ Mike Lewis (GT-1).
On The Gas From The Start: Though this is the Western Conference opener, drivers are coming from around the country to be a part of it, gathering the National Points to help qualify for the SCCA National Championship Runoffs and get an early jump on the season. Points at the Majors Races, including this weekend’s BFGoodrich Tires Sebring Super Tour, come with a bonus when factoring into the Divisional and SafeRacer National Racing Series point championships. What does that mean? We’re seeing it already – the best drivers are coming to the best races.
The Western Conference counts the top six finishes toward a conference champion, making this event weekend important for those with a long-term vision of the top prize.
Fun For The Family: Fans may attend the event at Auto Club Speedway as guests of the Cal Club and the SCCA for free. Admission includes a free program and a paddock pass allowing spectators into the garage areas for up close visits with the cars and drivers. The Dawn Of An Era: In September 2012, the Sports Car Club of America rolled out the U.S. Majors Tour as the top level of amateur racing in this country. With events coast-to-coast and split into four Conferences, the Western Conference season opens this weekend with a doubleheader hosted by Cal Club at Auto Club Speedway. Drivers are coming from all over the west coast and beyond to participate in the weekend, featuring an enhanced race experience for drivers and fans, from pre-race to the product on the track to what happens after the race.
BFGoodrich Tires, Back Again: The official street tire of the SCCA, BFGoodrich Tires returns for its third season as sponsor of the BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour events. The 2013 schedule features six weekends that are part of the Super Tour and feature some of the best-known tracks in the United States. Including the early-January opener at Sebring International Raceway and this weekend’s races at Auto Club Speedway, the Circuit of the Americas, VIRginia International Raceway, and Watkins Glen International also host a BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour weekend this season. Each of those events are a part of the U.S. Majors Tour and the robust SafeRacer SCCA National Racing Series.
SCCA Club Racers – The Best In The Country: There are lots of amateur road racing groups in the United States, but the clear leader of top drivers is with the SCCA. Though most are weekend warriors who take vacations from their full-time jobs to attend races, it’s a craft taken seriously. Bobby Rahal, Mark Donohue, Roger Penske, Michael Andretti, and actor/driver Paul Newman got their start in SCCA Club Racing. More recently, you could have seen current stars Boris Said, Graham Rahal, Sam Hornish or J.R. Hildebrand at an SCCA Club race. This weekend’s entry list includes current SCCA Pro Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup hot shoe Elliott Skeer.
