500-plus cars are at Circuit of the Americas this weekend for the BFGoodrich Tires Texas Super Tour. Here are some things to look for: Formula One Follow Up: For almost 70 years, the SCCA has laid the foundation for a successful career in racing. With that in mind, it’s appropriate that the pinnacle of amateur motorsports makes its first start at the track that brought the pinnacle of motorsports back to the United States.
Everything’s Bigger In Texas: The entry list for this weekend’s BFGoodrich Tires Texas Super Tour is, most likely, the largest of the season until the SCCA National Championship Runoffs this September. Currently, 518 cars are on the entry list, with race group two (small production-based cars) and group three (Spec Racer Ford) capped at 85 entries.
South By Any Means Necessary: It’s not just the usual suspects that have big fields this weekend. While Spec Racer Ford and Spec Miatas have filled up the entry list, so have the big formula cars, all excited to stretch their legs on a track designed with them in mind.
A whopping 23 Formula Atlantic machines are currently on the entry list, with the Formula 1000 entrants just behind with 20. They’ll be joined in Group 5 by more than 30 C Sports Racing and D Sports Racing machines, guaranteeing one fast race group.
SCCA Guests: SCCA participants, volunteers, members and guests should be sure to arrive between 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Thursday, 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, and 7 a.m. to noon on Saturday and Sunday while registration is open. This will allow access to the facilities, paddock and Club members throughout the weekend The Dawn Of An Era: In September 2012, the Sports Car Club of America rolled out the U.S. Majors Tour as the top level of amateur racing in this country. With events coast-to-coast and split into four Conferences, the Mid-States Conference season opens this weekend with a doubleheader hosted by the Lone Star Region at Circuit of the Americas. Drivers are coming from all over the country to participate in the weekend, featuring an enhanced race experience for drivers and fans, from pre-race to post-race activities.
BFGoodrich Tires, Back Again: The official street tire of the SCCA, BFGoodrich Tires returns for its third season as sponsor of the BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour events. The 2013 schedule features six weekends that are part of the Super Tour and feature some of the best-known tracks in the United States. Including the January rounds at Sebring International Raceway and Auto Club Speedway, VIRginia International Raceway, and Watkins Glen International also host a BFGoodrich Tires Super Tour weekend this season. Each of those events are a part of the U.S. Majors Tour and the robust SafeRacer SCCA National Racing Series.
SCCA Club Racers – The Best In The Country: There many amateur road racing groups in the United States, but the clear leader of top drivers is with the SCCA. Though most are weekend warriors who take vacations from their full-time jobs to attend races, it’s a craft taken seriously. Bobby Rahal, Mark Donohue, Roger Penske, Michael Andretti, and actor/driver Paul Newman got their start in SCCA Club Racing. More recently, you could have seen current stars Boris Said, Graham Rahal, Sam Hornish or J.R. Hildebrand at an SCCA Club race. This weekend features National Champions, professional race winners and series champions, and up-and-coming stars on the entry list.
