AUSTIN, Texas (March 8, 2013) – Wet weather coated the Circuit of the Americas on Friday during practice for this weekend’s BFGoodrich Tires Texas Super Tour and Mid-States Conference Majors Tour doubleheader.
Though it would be hard to classify the precipitation as pure rain, a steady drizzle hung over the world-renowned circuit throughout the day and forced a number of groups to bolt on rain tires.
The facility that brought world’s premier motorsports series to the United States last November was introduced to the world’s premier amateur racers to rave reviews. The 20-turn, 3.427-mile circuit will, this weekend, add some of the top drivers in the SafeRacer National Series to a short history that has already seen the names Hamilton and Gurney on the top of the podium.
With only a handful of drivers having been on the track prior to today’s practice, the more than 500 entrants were forced to navigate the traffic and learn the track in a pair of 25-minute practice sessions. While no points were awarded nor grids set, the afternoon qualifying sessions for each group set the order for Saturday morning’s release onto the track for qualifying – giving the faster cars a clear track, at least in theory.
Saturday morning’s 20-minute qualifying sessions for each of the seven race groups will set the starting grid for the afternoon’s 30-minute races. Sunday’s schedule will mirror Saturday.
Each day of the BFGoodrich Tire Super Tour will score points toward the Mid-States Conference Championship.
