TOPEKA, Kan. (October 31, 2013) – The Saturday sprint race format on the Sports Car Club of America’s U.S. Majors Tour weekend schedule has been amended, giving Series organizers the flexibility to extend timed races where the schedule allows.

It was previously announced that each race weekend on the 2014 calendar will feature a common format. All will be double race weekends, with Saturday’s race a 20-minute timed sprint race, and Sunday’s race the traditional 45-mile format. Both races will count for full points and receive trophies and commemorative checkered flags, though the full podium ceremonies will only take place for Sunday’s races.

Where conditions allow, the sprint races can be extended to up to 30 minutes, though 20 minutes will remain the baseline. Available run time, including track rules and daylight, the facility and length of anticipated clean-up between sessions will be included in the determining factors.

The length of the sprint races will be included in the supplemental regulations and pre-event schedule.

“One of the goals of the U.S. Majors Tour is to provide each participant with real, quality track time while providing compatible race groupings,” Butch Kummer, SCCA Director, Club Racing, said. “To develop a feasible schedule for each venue, we need to be aware of a number of different factors, including items that aren’t as easy to see – the time it takes for out laps, in laps, releasing cars from grid, and so on. Along with local rules and restraints dictated by track configuration, what looks like available time in the schedule isn’t always so. Accounting for all of that, we can, and will, increase the race lengths where it is possible.”

Of additional note to participants in the U.S. Majors Tour program, a modified point structure for 2014 was approved by the Board of Directors in October. A race winner will receive 25 points in 2014, followed by 21 for second-place, and 18 for third. Thereafter, each position will decrease by one (17 for fourth, 16 for fifth, etc.) through 20th place, which pays a single point. A full point scale is available through the Majors website.
