Friday Starts Big Weekend at Road Atlanta

BRASELTON, Ga. (March 21, 2014) – More than 300 drivers are on the entry list for this weekend’s BFGoodrich Tires Atlanta Super Tour at Road Atlanta, Rounds Five and Six of the Eastern Conference Majors Tour.

Friday featured a morning 25-minute qualifying session for each of the eight race groups this weekend, and a 15-minute session in the afternoon.

Up And Away: As of Thursday morning, the entry list for the BFGoodrich Tires Atlanta Super Tour featured 312 race entries, spread out among eight race groups, with each group featuring at least 27 entries. That number would be significantly higher than the 202 entries from a season ago, when the event fell one week after an SCCA Majors race at Circuit of the Americas.

The eight race groups, a change from last year’s seven, was intended to bolster the experience for the open wheel machines. They’ve supported the move, with 14 Formula Atlantic machines and 10 Prototype 1 cars on the entry list, both season highs.

Spec Miata Mania: The Spec Miata field appears poised to steal the show this weekend at Road Atlanta. A track that plays heavily in the draft, along with a whopping 59 Spec Miatas, will make for a spectacular show.

It’s not just quantity, however. The field features many of the SCCA Runoffs contenders, including back-to-back champion Jim Drago, Craig Berry, Denny Steyn, Yiannis Tsiounis, Voytek Burdzy, Erick Stearns and Blake Clements and more.

Former SCCA Pro Racing Mazda MX-5 Cup presented by BFGoodrich Tires champion Todd Lamb is on the entry list, as are current pro series competitors Joseph Cantania, Lucas Cantania, Forrest Landy, Sebastian Landy and Dillon Machavern. Multi-time Pirelli World Challege race winner Aaron Povoledo is also in the mix this weekend.

So how close will it be this weekend? After one day of qualifying, 15 cars are within one second, led by Clements’ 1:42.454.

Thunder Rolls: Doug Peterson and Simon Gregg are consistent battlers in the SCCA Pro Racing Trans Am Series this season, and will lead a strong field of GT-1 machines at Road Atlanta. Zachary Monette, who was a race contender at NOLA Motorsports Park, also returns to take a run at the wins that narrowly eluded him in February.

Live Timing, Notes and Audio: Not in Atlanta this weekend for the BFGoodrich Tires Atlanta Super Tour? You can follow along at home. Timing is available on the Race Monitor app for your tablet or smart phone, and notes will be available all weekend on Twitter @SCCALive. Scott Conway and Greg Creamer will be calling the races live, with a combination of all three available online in one place at SCCA.com/SCCALive.
