2017 SCCA Mechanic of the Year: Michell Hemus

TOPEKA, Kan. (Nov. 16, 2017) -- The SCCA® Mechanic of the Year honoree is selected annually by the technical staff at Sports Car Club of America® based on submissions received through a survey completed at SCCA.com or through email invitation.  The names of 55 mechanics were submitted during the nomination process this year.  But after much discussion, Michell Hemus, of the San Francisco Region, has been named 2017 Mechanic of the Year.

Michell, who works with M & L Racing, received nearly 40 unique nomination submissions from SCCA members. She has been a life-long supporter of the Club, beginning as a volunteer worker, and been a driving instructor for San Francisco Region’s Competition Driving Ground School.  Along the way, she has transformed into a first-class mechanic for one of the most competitive racing teams on the West Coast, and many claim she is one of the most car-savvy, hard-working people in the Region.

To be considered for Mechanic of the Year, nominees must demonstrate a strong commitment to their duties and to the drivers they support.  Michell, widely considered the epitome of excellence and hard work, has shown a dedication to preparing race cars conscientiously, reliably and immaculately, displaying the utmost of skill and dedication to her craft.  She has led her team to countless race wins, multiple regional championships, and sent drivers on to pro careers.  Additionally, she is passionate about sharing her knowledge by training young mechanics starting out in the trade.

Michell is patient and encouraging with a welcoming smile and infectious personality that makes her a friend for everyone in the paddock.  She is known to be the “go-to” person for questions, tips and assistance for anyone, ready to lend a hand in any capacity necessary, be it hauling equipment to the track for the Tech crew or repairing broken equipment for the Start crew.  She takes time to thank emergency personnel for getting cars and drivers back safely, and has gained the admiration of peers, competitors and volunteers alike.

An inspiration to all, Michell is making the SRF/SRF3 class, the Region and the Club better.  Always showing pride and professionalism, she embodies all that is good and right about Club racing, and is a superb ambassador for the sport.

Kudos to Michell for earning the Mechanic of the Year award and for all the tremendous work she has done across the board for so many years.
