Created in 1995, when the
SCCA’s Land ’o’ Lakes Region and the Sports Car Club of La Crosse hosted the
inaugural event in--where else, La Crosse, Wis.--the United States RoadRally
Challenge (USRRC) brings together each fall the best RoadRally teams from the
SCCA’s 114 regions for a weekend of winner-take-all
rallying.
Typically, each weekend
includes three national rallies that test teams in the club’s three major
categories of competition: GTA (for Game, Tour, Adventure, otherwise known as
non-timed gimmick rallies), Touring rallies (straightforward time-speed-distance
events), and Course rallies (traditionally called trap rallies). To win a
weekend title, a team must excel at all three kinds of
rallying.
While during a typical USRRC
weekend, a team may see 600 to 750 miles of on-the-road competition, there is
also ample time for socializing, hospitality, and renewing
friendships.
By design, the USRRC has no
fixed home. Each year, local SCCA regions propose a venue for future events, and
the RoadRally Board selects the venue it believes will best represent the sport
and provide contestants with an enjoyable, challenging weekend. Since 1995, the
USRRC has crossed the county from Wisconsin to Virginia to Oregon and back. This
year’s USRRC Oct. 16-18 marks the third time La Crosse will host the rally
weekend. Look for superb roads, fine fall weather (mostly), and an opportunity
to explore the picturesque northwestern corner of the Badger
State.
